Abu Dhabi: Over a thousand fish of different sizes and species picked a five-star hotel in the capital as their new home.
Yellowmouth Grouper, Dog Snapper, Blue Runner and many more breeds made the 700-metre waterway that connects the entire Qaryat Al Beri complex their new home. It was a surprise to the engineering team who discovered the presence of aquatic life in the canal.
The team is protecting, feeding and ensuring that the water is suitable for their new guests.
“The discovery of fish in the canals was a pleasant surprise for us,” Stephan Kapek, the Shangri-La hotel manager said.
“We are now ensuring that the species are well looked after and we are currently developing the canals to provide a safe and healthy environment for the marine life to prosper,” he further added.
Dramatic increase
The canals have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of fish since. The motorised abras that run in the canals — to serve the hotel’s guests —are powered with electricity and emit zero carbon.
This causes no damage to the aquatic life.
A total cleansing of the waterway has proven to be a cumbersome task, as the engineers had to build a makeshift dam to house the aquatic life before draining the water.
However, the team is doing all they can to protect these guests by ensuring that no chemicals are added to the water, and that the waterways remain free of garbage.
